Leadership Institute – Part I | Module 2: CliftonStrengths®
Description

The League’s Leadership Institute is designed to help emerging and mid-level managers build their leadership skills to more effectively prepare for succession planning and promotion. This virtual school is being offered during a 5-month period starting in August running through December with half-day sessions during the same week for a total of 12 online sessions. Students are encouraged to partner with their supervisor to tailor their action plan for each class to fit their goals for professional development.
An orientation will be provided prior to the start of the Institute to acclimate students with the UW Learning Management System. please watch for communications from The League – more details after your have registered.

Module 1: Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace – Barbara Burgess
Tapping into emotional intelligence results in a better bottom line for both businesses and employees. Research clearly shows this, yet many courses on emotional intelligence still focus on outdated concepts of managing emotions vs. leveraging them. In this dynamic course, you’ll not only learn the fundamentals of identifying emotions, but you’ll also discover how you can apply those concepts in today’s post-pandemic workplace. Navigating online meetings, social media, the age of the influencer and an ever expanding list of work-life balance challenges with remote vs. in-office work requires a high level of emotional intelligence. Module 2: CliftonStrengths® – Lauren Pagenkopf
Unlock your potential as an individual and a leader in this interactive CliftonStrengths workshop. Participants will gain insights into their natural talents and learn how to transform these talents into powerful strengths. The session will also cover strategies for collaborating effectively with colleagues who possess different strengths and leveraging a team’s collective strengths to maximize engagement and achievement. Module 3: Employee Engagement & Coaching – Jill Mueller
Employee engagement is one of the toughest issues facing today’s employers as they struggle to maintain the talent and knowledge base necessary for competing in the global market. This course will help you gain an understanding of how to be more thoughtful and effective by using a coach approach in order to empower employees and create an environment of open communication and collaboration. Leave with techniques and a coaching plan that can be immediately applied on the job to reap organizational success. (.8 CEUs)

Module 4: Building Psychological Safety and Trust With Your Teams – Ann Manning
Organizations want high-performing teams, but there is no “team” without trust. Trust is hard to come by if team members don’t feel safe enough to speak up, be candid, take reasonable risks and draw outside of the lines. This course helps you recognize and promote psychological safety—clearing the big blocks to innovation, connection and collaboration in your organization. (.8 CEUs)

Module 5: Project Management Foundations – Jackie Ramin
Effective project outcomes start with a strong planning foundation. This course focuses on the essential components of the project planning phase and how they drive successful execution and control. Participants will learn how to monitor progress and measure performance across the project lifecycle using meaningful metrics. Through case studies and hands-on exercises, attendees will explore practical approaches to estimating timelines, allocating resources, and forecasting costs to support accurate budgeting and efficient project scheduling. This program is designed to empower managers at all levels by providing a robust framework of best practices essential for effectively managing themselves, their teams, and their outcomes. Structured into three comprehensive modules—Goal Setting, Effective Communication, and Accountability—each component functions independently while also interlocking to reinforce holistic managerial capabilities. Together, these modules equip managers to set clear goals, manage time and tasks efficiently, optimize communication, deliver impactful feedback, and establish accountability systems that drive high performance and employee success. Jackie Ramin

Jackie Ramin is a program manager at CDW in Madison, Wisconsin. In her 19 years at CDW, she has managed information technology projects including Cisco IP telephony, network engineering, servers and storage, data center co-location, e-commerce web site development and building and data center construction. Ramin is PMP-certified and has a master’s certificate in project management from UW-Madison. In addition, she has served on the UW-Madison School of Business Project Management Advisory Board and has taught a master’s level course on project management. Before entering the world of project management, she worked in college and university administration at Indiana University, Arizona State University, Michigan State University, University of Alabama and UW-Madison.
